Vathy Spitaki
Vathy is the capital of Ithaca – intimate and colourful, its waterfront encircles the sheltered harbour and is lined with pastel-coloured Venetian houses, shops, small bars and tavernas. At the far end of the waterfront is Loutsa beach.
Vathy has a good selection of tavernas and shops but refreshingly it is a Greek “working” port and not a tourist “resort”.
The atmosphere is sleepy and waterfront activity centres around the arrival of daily ferries, yachts and local fishing boats – an enjoyable theatre viewed from a shaded waterfront bar.
Vathy Spitaki (Greek for small house) is just a 3-minute walk away from the waterfront. Close to village life but with a private and peaceful courtyard garden and three terraces to be alone and have either sun or shade. One of the terraces has magnificent views over the bay, flanked by green hillsides and a special spot for sunsets.
The pretty front courtyard garden has citrus trees, a pear tree, a pink peppercorn tree and an olive tree. A few steps up lead to a terrace built around a mandarin tree, which has a barbecue area with a seating and sunbed area. A rear garden has citrus, fig and pomegranate trees, purple bougainvillaea and lemon verbena bushes.
A hired boat can be moored a few minutes’ walk away (to explore the island’s coastline). Secluded beaches are a 15 minute walk or a short drive or boat ride away.
A flight of outside steps (33 in total) leads to a small pedestrianised lane.
The house has been fully renovated in a "modern village" style with lots of thoughtful touches to provide modern comforts.
Maid service & linen change once per week
Location: car hire only recommended for island exploration. A municipal car park is a 1-minute walk away.
Accommodation (all on one floor): sitting room; two double bedrooms; shower room (there is also an outside shower with hot and cold water).
